What is SI?

The goal of Structural Integration is to re-establish the body to its natural state of alignment and balance by lengthening, restoring and reorganizing the body’s connective tissue, known as fascia.

Fascia is dense fibrous connective tissue which surrounds and supports all the muscles, bones and organs throughout your body in a continuous web-like layer.

This fascial net, or connective tissue matrix, is the body’s internal system of flexible support which plays a major role in joint stability in general movement coordination, as well as in back pain and many other pathologies.

Fascia responds to injury, chronic tension and habitual movement patterns by rearranging the tissue in order to meet the force of gravity and mechanical forces created with movement.

When fascia shortens and thickens, it becomes locked in less than optimal patterns of strain and pulls the body out of alignment, impairing joint mobility and function. This in turn will give us the feeling of chronic pain, discomfort, stiffness, decreased flexibility and impairment of movement.

A practitioner of Structural Integration manually lengthens and repositions the fascia to release any restriction within the tissue and balance the body’s segments along the vertical line of gravity, which allows the body to function more effectively.

As a result, the thickened, toughened tissue becomes soft, rehydrated and more pliable, allowing joints to move with greater freedom and individual muscles to glide on top of each other. Thus body function improves and the person’s performance changes significantly.
