Structural Integration Sessions

Starting something new can bring questions. This page is here to help you understand what a Structural Integration session is like, how the process unfolds, and how you can get the most from the work.

Structural Integration is not a quick-fix treatment. It is a process designed to create real, lasting change by addressing how your body is organised within gravity.

Real, lasting change — not just temporary relief

Many people come to Structural Integration after trying massage, stretching, or exercise, only to find that the results don’t last. These approaches often focus on symptoms.

Structural Integration works differently. It addresses the underlying organisation of your body, particularly the fascial system, and how you relate to gravity. By working with these deeper patterns, change becomes more sustainable.

This work supports your body in reorganising itself from the inside out.

The process: a series of sessions

The Rolf Method of Structural Integration traditionally consists of a series of ten sessions, each with a specific focus. The sessions are designed to work with the whole body in a systematic way:

  • From head to toe
  • From left to right
  • From front to back
  • From superficial to deep layers

Each session builds on the previous one, allowing change to happen gradually and be integrated into everyday movement.

While the Ten Series provides a clear framework, sessions are always tailored to the individual, taking into account your history, needs, and goals.

Why a series of sessions matters

Structural patterns develop over years — they do not change all at once. A series of sessions allows:

  • Gradual reorganisation of the fascial network
  • Integration of change into daily movement and posture
  • Progressive improvement in balance, coordination, and efficiency
  • Long-term stability rather than short-term relief

Each session supports your body’s natural capacity to adapt and change.

What happens in a typical session?

At the beginning

At the start of your first session, we take time to understand your unique body organization, your pain, and your goals.

  • You complete a health questionnaire
  • We discuss your health history, current concerns, and goals
  • Your posture and movement patterns are assessed through visual observation and gentle movement tests

This information guides the focus of the work and helps ensure the sessions are appropriate and safe for you.

During the session

The hands-on work involves slow, precise manual techniques applied to areas where the fascia is restricted. This technique is called fascia manipulation.

You are an active participant in the process. At times, you may be invited to:

  • Make slow, specific movements
  • Breathe into areas of restriction
  • Explore new movement patterns

This is an important educational part of the work, helping you develop greater body awareness and recognise habitual patterns of tension.

Sessions are unhurried, attentive, and adapted moment by moment to how your body responds.

At the end of the session

Each session concludes with postural integration and movement coaching, based on the areas we have worked on.

You may receive simple movement suggestions or awareness cues to practise at home. These are not strenuous exercises, but practical tools to support integration in daily life.

Movement education and habit change

Structural Integration is not only about releasing tissue — it is also about learning to move differently.

Through movement coaching, you will:

  • Become more aware of habitual postural and movement patterns
  • Learn new, more efficient ways of standing, sitting, walking, and moving
  • Develop proprioceptive awareness — the ability to sense what is happening in your own body

This learning helps prevent old patterns from returning and supports lasting change.

Is Structural Integration right for you?

Structural Integration may be especially helpful if you:

  • Experience chronic pain or stiffness
  • Feel compressed or misaligned
  • Struggle with posture despite effort
  • Want lasting change rather than temporary relief
  • Are curious about deeper body awareness and movement efficiency

If you are ready to improve how your body functions within gravity — not just how it feels for a day — this work offers a powerful path forward.
